Rancho Santa Margarita (RSM) is a master planned community located in South Orange County. The area was originally occupied by Native Americans, but the Spanish explorers were known to have come to the area as early as 1769. RSM lies in an area of land originally laid out for a rancho by the then Mexican governor. The first homes were built in 1980 and the city became a reality in January of 2000. In Rancho Santa Margarita lie the communities of Dove Canyon, Rancho Cielo, Las Flores and Robinson Ranch. The city consists of approximately thirteen square miles and 48,000 people. School districts served in the city are Capistrano Unified and Saddleback Unified.
